Black and white, the two powerful extremes, fascinating designers time and time again. For 2021, fashion brands reiterate the force of this duo, in a “less is more” metaphor.
As Coco Chanel put it, “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance” and we already know a part of her legacy consists in fabulous designs in black & white. Virginie Viard took the monochrome obsession further and created a Spring/Summer 2021 Chanel collection where the famous duo reigned the catwalk.
Fendi, Prada, Dior, Loewe and Giambattista Valli also took the black & white trend on the 2021 runways, each presenting their own version of black & white story.
While 2020 was certainly a challenging year for everyone, the “back to basics” and minimalist direction is no surprise. If after the 2008 crisis, the normcore trend was born, we may now be facing a new fashion era, with simpler, yet sophisticated fashion taste and what better main actor than the black & white duo?
Black & white is as timeless as it is always appropriate. From day to night, from plain to geometrical patterns, it can be easily worn and transformed during the day & context, with the help of accessories and jewellery. And if you want an extra touch of drama, you can always opt for a fashion trick like oversized shoulders , expressive ruffles or asymmetrical cuts.
While it may seam easy to wear, there is one main requirement you should always have in mind when choosing a monochrome outfit: the quality. Black and white items, as simple as they seem, are usually statement pieces and you should see them as a fashion investment.
