 Virgil Abloh would have celebrated his 42nd birthday today. The so-called ‘Millenial Karl Lagerfeld’ was among the most influential pioneers of luxury street fashion, which he used to refer to as part of the “post-streetwear movement” rooted in skating and hip-hop cultural influences. He made history as the first Black American on the helm of a French fashion house when she was appointed as Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton menswear in 2018. However, his success on the fashion scene has sky-rocketed through his own brand, Off-White. Through Off-White, Virgil has managed to blend the lines between contemporary street fashion and luxury, scoring various collaborations with Ikea, Nike, McDonald's, Evian, Takashi Murakami, and many more, creating memorable moments of pop culture and writing a page in the fashion history book of the 21st century. Since he has also established a precedent for other big luxury names in the industry, we indirectly owe him various other momentous collaborations like Dior X Nike, Louis Vuitton X Supreme, or Gucci X Dapper Dan. Virgil was closely working with Kanye West, whom he met through his manager. Rumour has it that he got the chance to get acquainted with the latter by skipping his graduation day back in 2002. His creations were worn by everyone from Beyonce, to Rihanna and Drake. Virgil Abloh didn’t only bring his contribution to fashion, he was a renowned electronic DJ and used to reference various types of art in all of his creative manifestos, being particularly inspired by Renaissance painter Caravaggio.
